Teaching Excellence Awards
The Michael Frederickou Teaching Excellence Awards recognize and celebrate academic staff who demonstrate excellence in teaching and contribute to advancing the University’s strategic goals in teaching.
Eligibility
All academic staff, full-time or part-time, who have taught in conventional or distance learning programmes during the academic year 2025–2026, are eligible.
Assessment Criteria
The awards recognize academic staff who promote a student-centered approach and innovation in higher education.
Submissions should demonstrate how the nominee’s teaching contributes to a range of the following:
(a) Is accessible to students and interacts effectively beyond the classroom (e.g. office hours, advising);
(b) Is supportive, approachable, and responsive to individual student needs;
(c) Uses creative and innovative teaching methods that encourage active student participation;
(d) Integrates experiential and applied learning approaches, such as project-based, problem-based, or team-based learning, and engages students with real-world challenges.
(e) Applies interdisciplinary approaches and fosters connections across fields of study;
(f) Demonstrates enthusiasm for the subject and motivates students to engage with the material;
(g) Supports students’ sense of purpose and confidence in their academic and professional development;
(h) Organizes and presents material in a clear and engaging way;
(i) Inspires curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning;
(j) Encourages independent, critical, and original thinking;
(k) Creates an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students;
(l) Supports students’ integration into the University and wider campus community.
Procedure
Academic staff may be nominated through one of the following routes:
• Self-nomination
Interested applicants are invited to apply by completing the application form no later than Sunday, 31 May 2026.
• Nomination by a colleague
Candidates may be nominated by a colleague by completing the nomination form no later than Sunday, 24 May 2026.
Nominees will be informed and invited to submit their application.
• Nomination by students
Candidates may be nominated by at least three students by completing the nomination form no later than Sunday, 24 May 2026.
Nominees will be informed and invited to submit their application.
